CNN (per CNN headline/summary) stresses anger in Ukraine and analyst doubts. An NPR member station headline frames it as easing pressure on Moscow before the midterms. Fox is consistent with the others on the deal’s terms.

Health & Longevity: tai chi and fewer falls in older adults

The finding: Tai chi programs were linked to fewer falls in older adults, roughly half as many per month in programs shorter than a year.

The source: Lomas-Vega et al., J Am Geriatr Soc, 2017, a meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials with 2,673 people aged 56 to 98 (search through May 2016). Five trials (1,432 people) of under a year showed about half as many falls per month; six trials (1,546 people) of a year or longer showed 13% fewer.

Do this today: Follow a 20-minute beginner tai chi video near a sturdy chair or wall, then repeat it two or three times this week (the studied programs ran one to three sessions weekly).

Worth knowing: Tai chi did not change time to first fall, evidence for injury-causing falls was rated very low quality, comparison groups varied, and the review is nearly a decade old. This newsletter isn’t written by a medical professional and isn’t a substitute for advice from your doctor, so check with them first if you have balance problems or a history of falls.
