Saturday’s issue of The Cross Check Daily puts six lead stories side by side across Fox News, Al Jazeera, PBS and AP wire copy. Each story shows what the reporting agrees on and where the framing differs, followed by a markets snapshot, a health item and a trivia question.

Iran says a supertanker hit a mine in the Strait of Hormuz; CENTCOM says mines are cleared

Agree: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says an oil supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude hit a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz and caught fire, calling the ship’s route “unauthorised.” Al Jazeera’s live blog carries no independent confirmation.

Spin check: Fox News carries the other side of the mine question: US Central Command chief Adm. Brad Cooper says CENTCOM has cleared mines in the strait and protected commercial shipping. Fox also reports that the UK maritime agency UKMTO counted 12 ships attacked around Hormuz this week (six continued or reached port, one lost, two disabled, three unconfirmed), and quotes an Iranian army spokesman saying the strait “will reopen” if “America leaves the region.” Al Jazeera adds UKMTO reports that two tankers were hit off Jubail, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, one by a rocket-propelled grenade fired from a small boat.

Factual disagreement: Iran’s Guard says a mine hit the tanker, while CENTCOM says the strait’s mines have been cleared. Neither claim is independently confirmed, so we report the mine strike as Iran’s claim.

Drone hits chemical tanker off Romania as Black Sea attacks widen

Agree: A drone hit the chemical tanker Wine Trader about 13 nautical miles southeast of Romania’s port of Sulina on Thursday and set it on fire. Five crew were rescued and seven were still missing, per the Romanian Naval Authority as reported by AP.

Spin check: PBS, running AP copy, says Romanian President Nicusor Dan confirmed the drone strike but did not say where the drones came from, while Bulgaria’s prime minister said Russia was likely behind Oct. 13 attacks off Bulgaria, where 11 crew of the HS Dignity are missing. Kyiv Post goes further: it quotes Romania’s foreign minister saying “Russia bears full responsibility,” reports three Russian Shahed and other drone incursions into Romanian airspace on Thursday alone, and says NATO’s council is expected to meet within days.

Factual disagreement: Kyiv Post says attacks on four merchant ships killed eight people in 24 hours. AP lists crews as missing (seven on the Wine Trader, 11 on the HS Dignity) rather than confirmed dead. We use AP’s missing counts.

Trump waives Russia sanctions and tariffs under new Graham law

Agree: Trump signed an order Friday waiving sanctions and tariffs under the new Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, saying the waiver is in the “national interests of the United States.” The law could have imposed tariffs of up to 100% on the biggest buyers of Russian oil and gas.

Spin check: Fox Business ties the waiver to Trump’s deal with Vladimir Putin, under which the Kremlin agreed to eventually release millions of tons of diesel, and notes the order leaves some earlier Russia sanctions in place and lets Trump reinstate the tariffs. Wire copy carried by Devdiscourse, published Oct. 14 before the waiver, reports that six Republican senators (including McConnell, Collins and Murkowski) joined six Democrats in a letter calling the deal “a gift to our adversary and a betrayal of our Allies,” and that critics note the 300,000-plus metric tons of diesel it describes is less than a day of US transport-sector use.

Framing difference: Fox Business frames the waiver as a move on diesel prices before the midterms, with no reaction to the waiver itself in its report. The wire copy leads with bipartisan Senate objections to the deal. The diesel figures also differ: “millions of tons” eventually versus more than 300,000 metric tons immediately.

Norte Fire in Orange County forces about 6,000 homes to evacuate

Agree: The Norte Fire started Friday in San Clemente, Orange County, and spread into San Juan Capistrano, with at least six homes damaged or destroyed and about 6,000 homes (16,000 residents) under evacuation orders by Friday evening, per Al Jazeera.

Spin check: Al Jazeera attributes the rapid spread to unseasonably high temperatures, low humidity and Santa Ana winds of about 35 to 55 mph, and reports tens of thousands lost power in Los Angeles County as utilities tried to cut spark risk. Fox Weather adds High Wind Warnings with gusts of 50 to 70 mph in higher terrain, one firefighter treated for heat exhaustion, and that Gov. Gavin Newsom put the state operations center on enhanced readiness through Sunday. ABC News published an earlier, smaller estimate and red flag warnings through Saturday night. No outlet reported a cause.

Factual disagreement: Acreage: Orange County Fire Authority said about 465 acres, Cal Fire put it near 570 by evening (per Al Jazeera), Fox Weather says at least 465 and ABC’s early report said about 250. We use the latest, about 570. For the separate Henderson Fire, Al Jazeera says 20% contained and Fox Weather says 0%.

Infantino apologizes to FIFA council over World Cup rights plan; critics unmoved

Agree: FIFA president Gianni Infantino apologized to the FIFA council Thursday for “mistakes” in how a plan to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights was communicated, but gave no documents; critics said they got no satisfactory answers.

Spin check: PBS, running AP copy, reports the plan was valued at $4.2 billion with investors led by Joshua Kushner owning at least 20%, that UEFA is leading efforts to remove Infantino before or at the March election, and that he offered each of FIFA’s 211 members an extra $15 million over four years. Geo News, running AFP copy, leads with Infantino calling the plan “in no way a done deal” and “permanently withdrawn,” says many European federations have withdrawn support citing his ties to Trump, and closes on a $6.35 billion development fund that may help his re-election bid. Al Jazeera, running AP, adds that FIFA will review whether to keep a peace prize created to be given to Trump.

Factual disagreement: The outlets disagree on basic figures: AP puts the FIFA council at 37 members and AFP at 36, and the per-member payouts differ ($15 million extra over four years versus $25 million each from the new fund). We could not reconcile them, so treat those numbers as unconfirmed.

Fox reports press secretary Katie Zacharia is “transitioning out”

Agree: Fox News reported Friday that Katie Zacharia is “transitioning out” as White House press secretary within days of her debut briefing; Trump had said of the job, “Maybe it’s not for her.” Fox named no successor.

Spin check: AP, via KTAR, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution covered her Oct. 13 debut instead: a roughly 14-minute briefing with questions from three outlets, after which Trump said, “I thought she did excellent.” Fox’s exit story quotes unnamed correspondents calling it “brutal” and White House communications director Steven Cheung saying reporters “have the thinnest skin,” and says her repeated claims of being a lawyer were seen as a bigger threat to her job. AP reports she holds a law degree from Pepperdine. When we checked, we found no other outlet confirming the exit.

Framing difference: AP and the AJC describe a routine debut with a Trump endorsement, while Fox reports the exit and its fallout. The exit rests on Fox’s reporting alone for now, and the lawyer question is unresolved in what we read.

Markets snapshot: Stocks fall on Friday as oil jumps

  • S&P 500: 7,659.44 (-1.1%)
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average: 52,002.41 (-0.3%)
  • Nasdaq Composite: 26,140.03 (-2.1%)
  • Brent crude: $109.69 (+3.6%)

Index figures are Friday, October 16 closes from an AP market report (AP via ABC News). Stocks fell across the board, with the Nasdaq down the most, and the S&P 500 lost 84.62 points. We could not read AP’s full write-up, so we are not offering a cause for the drop. Oil moved the other way. Brent’s $109.69 and the +3.6% daily gain are the latest values on Trading Economics for Oct. 16, not an official settlement price, and the site says Brent rose more than 5% for the week on Strait of Hormuz supply concerns.

Health & Longevity: 7,000 steps a day may be enough

The finding: People who averaged about 7,000 steps a day had a 47% lower risk of dying from any cause than people averaging about 2,000, and a 25% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease. For several outcomes, including cardiovascular death, the benefit leveled off around 7,000 steps rather than needing the often-quoted 10,000.

The source: American College of Cardiology journal scan of a Lancet Public Health meta-analysis (Ding et al., July 2025) that pooled 57 studies with device-measured step counts in adults.

Do this today: Check your phone’s step count, then add one 10 to 15 minute walk, such as after a meal, and see how close to 7,000 you get.

Worth knowing: These are associations, not proof that walking caused the benefit, and healthier people tend to walk more. The cardiovascular death estimate rests on only three studies that varied a lot from one to the next. Seven thousand is not a magic cutoff, and the right level differs by age and health. World Trivia

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says a tanker hit a mine in the Strait of Hormuz. At its narrowest point, about how wide is the strait: roughly 6 miles, 24 miles, or 60 miles?

Reveal the answer

About 24 miles (21 nautical miles, or 39 km) at its narrowest. According to Wikipedia, it widens to about 60 miles elsewhere, and each of the two shipping lanes is only 2 nautical miles wide.
