Tuesday’s issue of The Cross Check Daily puts six lead stories side by side across Fox News, CNN and other outlets, then closes with a markets snapshot, a research-backed health tip and a trivia question. This issue labeled each story US or World; the labels are kept in the headings.

US: Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on $27.6 billion of US goods take effect

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs of 15 to 50 percent on roughly $27.6 billion of US goods, hitting steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, took effect at 12:01 a.m. today, matching new US tariffs on Canadian goods dollar for dollar after trade talks collapsed. (CNN Business)

Coverage check: Fox News and Fox Business covered the collapse of talks and USTR Jamieson Greer’s line that no further negotiations are scheduled, framing Canada as having “walked away” from the best deal on offer. CNN, NPR, and the Washington Post covered the same effective date and dollar figures but centered the piece on Canadian PM Mark Carney’s “at war” comment and the cost to US consumers. The two sides agree on every hard number, tariff rates, the $27.6 billion figure, and today’s start date, they simply lead with different protagonists.

Framing difference: Canada “walked away” (Fox) versus Carney’s “at war” comment and consumer costs (CNN, NPR, Washington Post).

World: Witkoff and Kushner meet Zelensky in Kyiv a day after meeting Putin in Moscow

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on September 6, a day after a three hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as Washington pushes for a three way summit aimed at ending the war. (Axios)

Coverage check: Fox News reported the Kyiv meetings straightforwardly as part of the peace push. NBC, CNN, and the Kyiv Independent covered the same trip but split on tone, some calling the talks “substantive,” others skeptical the war ends soon. There is a genuine dispute layered on top, not about what happened in the room, but about Witkoff himself: Zelensky has publicly accused him of echoing Kremlin talking points after a Tucker Carlson interview in which Witkoff called Putin “super smart” and said he doesn’t “regard Putin as a bad guy.”

Factual disagreement: Zelensky’s accusation that Witkoff echoes Kremlin talking points, set against Witkoff’s own remarks.

US: Administration files a third emergency Supreme Court request on mail-in ballot restrictions

The Trump administration filed a third emergency request asking the Supreme Court to lift a federal judge’s block on a US Postal Service plan restricting mail-in ballots ahead of the midterms, after the Court already let related restrictions proceed in a 6-3 ruling in August. (NPR)

Coverage check: Fox News has framed the fight consistently as an “election integrity” win for the administration. NPR, NBC, and SCOTUSblog cover the same filings and the same Boston judge’s ruling, but add that studies and audits show noncitizen voting is rare, and that critics see risk in centralizing voter lists with USPS. Both sides agree on the litigation timeline and the judge’s ruling, they disagree on what the restrictions are actually solving.

Framing difference: an “election integrity” win (Fox) versus rare noncitizen voting and centralization risk (NPR, NBC, SCOTUSblog).

World: US forces disable or destroy three Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island

US Central Command forces disabled or destroyed three Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard fired on US Navy vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, pushing Brent crude to a six week high as Iran vowed a “more painful” response. (NBC News)

Coverage check: Fox News, CNN, NBC, and ABC all name the same three tankers and the same Kharg Island role in Iran’s oil exports, the facts on the ground are consistent across the board. Fox layered in VP Vance’s line blaming Iran directly for record diesel prices; CNN and NBC stuck to fog-of-war reporting. Worth noting: Trump himself called the conflict “small potatoes,” while Vance avoided the word “war,” a split inside the administration’s own messaging more than a media dispute.

Framing difference: Vance blaming Iran for record diesel prices (Fox) versus fog-of-war reporting (CNN, NBC).

US: Mistrial declared in the Lindsay Clancy case after an 11-1 deadlock

A Plymouth County jury deadlocked 11-1 after six days of deliberation, and a judge declared a mistrial in the case against Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother charged in the 2023 deaths of her three children; the court set September 29 to decide whether prosecutors will pursue a retrial. (NPR)

Coverage check: Fox News featured Dr. Phil calling the mistrial a “teachable moment” and warning that mental illness in the courtroom becomes “a political, ideological football.” NPR, PBS NewsHour, and CBS Chicago framed the case around gaps in postpartum mental health care rather than the courtroom drama. All outlets agree on the mistrial and the September 29 date. The real disagreement sits inside the case itself: the defense says Clancy was in postpartum psychosis, while prosecution experts testified to a different diagnosis and said she is criminally responsible, a genuine factual dispute over her mental state, not a media framing issue.

Factual disagreement: the defense says postpartum psychosis; prosecution experts testified to a different diagnosis and said she is criminally responsible.

World: AfD wins about 43.8 percent in Saxony-Anhalt, a record for a far-right party in a German state election

Germany’s far right Alternative for Germany party won about 43.8 percent of the vote in Sunday’s Saxony-Anhalt state election, the largest share any far right party has taken in a German state election since 1945, though it fell short of the majority needed to govern alone. (CNN)

Coverage check: Fox News put the AfD’s share at 43.9 percent, essentially identical to the 43.8 percent reported by CNN and Al Jazeera, so the numbers line up cleanly across outlets. Fox led with the youth and TikTok driven surge and Germany’s domestic intelligence office calling AfD a “right-wing extremist endeavor.” CNN and Al Jazeera led with the implications for European politics more broadly. One amplifier worth flagging: Kirill Dmitriev, a close Putin confidant, reposted praise for the result online, a Russian government-aligned voice cheering the outcome rather than a neutral commentator.

Framing difference: a youth and TikTok surge (Fox) versus European-politics implications (CNN, Al Jazeera).

Markets snapshot: Friday’s close after a stronger jobs report, with Brent near a six-week high

  • S&P 500: 7,718.60 (-0.38%)
  • Dow Jones: 53,414.25 (-0.51%)
  • Nasdaq: 26,506.99 (-0.29%)
  • Brent crude: $97.31 (+1.1%)

Friday’s session, the last full trading day before Monday’s Labor Day closure, closed lower across major indices after a stronger than expected August jobs report (162,000 jobs added, unemployment steady at 4.1%) reignited rate hike expectations ahead of the Fed’s September 16 meeting. Brent crude kept climbing into Monday’s session, nearing a six week high as the US-Iran conflict in the Persian Gulf, today’s top World story, continues to threaten regional oil supply.

Health & Longevity: postpartum depression treatments have become harder to access

The finding: The only two FDA-approved postpartum depression treatments have both become harder to access, brexanolone was discontinued commercially in the US as of January 1, 2025, leaving the oral drug zuranolone as the sole approved option, and most women prescribed an antidepressant for postpartum depression still don’t complete a full course.

The source: MGH Center for Women’s Mental Health analysis of two large US insurance claims databases (Symphony Health, over 4 million patients, and Myriad Genetics-Komodo Health, nearly 200,000 patients), 2026, finding 76.4% and 62.7% of women stopped treatment at least once; and an FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) pharmacovigilance analysis covering Q3 2023 through Q2 2024, identifying 142 distinct adverse event terms tied to zuranolone across 18 organ system classes.

Do this today: If you or someone you know is being treated for postpartum depression, ask the prescriber directly about completing the full course and what side effects to expect in the first few days.

Worth knowing: Real world safety data on zuranolone remains limited, and reported adverse events have included suicidal ideation alongside more common effects like somnolence and dizziness. This is not personalized medical advice, and anyone in crisis or having thoughts of self harm should contact a doctor or a crisis line immediately rather than wait for the next dose or appointment.

World Trivia

Reveal the answer

About 43.8% (43.9% by Fox News’s count), according to preliminary official results reported by Al Jazeera and CNN.
