Thursday’s issue of The Cross Check Daily puts six lead stories side by side across Fox News, CNN and other outlets, then closes with a markets snapshot, a research-backed health tip and a trivia question.
Federal Reserve raises its benchmark rate a quarter point, its first hike since 2023
The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, its first hike since 2023, with Chair Kevin Warsh saying inflation is “too high and has been for too long.” (Reuters, CNBC)
Coverage check: Fox Business reported the same rate and rationale, but paired it with President Trump publicly blasting Warsh for hiking against his wishes and a segment questioning whether the hike was “necessary.” CNN and NBC covered the identical numbers with more focus on Fed independence and the inflation fight. Everyone agrees on what the Fed did and why it says it did it, the disagreement is over whether it was the right call.
Framing difference: whether the hike was necessary (Fox Business) versus Fed independence and the inflation fight (CNN, NBC).
Indian and Pakistani naval vessels collide in the northern Arabian Sea
Indian and Pakistani naval vessels collided in the northern Arabian Sea on September 15, prompting both governments to summon each other’s diplomats and lodge formal protests. (Bloomberg)
Coverage check: India says the Pakistani vessel behaved in an “unacceptable and unprofessional” way in international waters, Pakistan says the Indian ship carried out “dangerous manoeuvres,” each blaming the other for causing the collision itself. US outlets, Fox and CNN included, ran only brief wire pickups with no independent angle, and no notable podcast commentary picked this one up.
Factual disagreement: each government blames the other for causing the collision.
House passes a War Powers Resolution 220 to 204 to limit Trump’s military operations against Iran
The House passed a War Powers Resolution 220 to 204 to limit President Trump’s military operations against Iran, the third such vote this year, with seven Republicans joining Democrats. (AP)
Coverage check: Fox News covered the same 220 to 204 tally and GOP defections under the headline “Republicans rebel against Trump,” pairing it with Vice President Vance’s warning that a US pullback could trigger a “worldwide energy crisis.” CNN and NBC reported the identical vote breakdown, framed more as a rebuke of Trump’s handling of the war. Tucker Carlson, who has publicly feuded with Trump specifically over Iran, has been a vocal critic of continuing the conflict, a rare case of independent commentary lining up with the resolution’s aim. RT (Russian state media) also covered the vote, emphasizing fears of American “boots on the ground,” a framing consistent with the outlet’s broader skepticism of US military action, worth flagging rather than treating as a neutral source. All of it agrees on the vote count, the dispute is over what it means.
Framing difference: a Republican rebellion plus an energy-crisis warning (Fox) versus a rebuke of Trump’s handling of the war (CNN, NBC).
Kosovo court convicts former President Hashim Thaçi of war crimes and sentences him to 25 years
A Hague-backed Kosovo Specialist Chambers court convicted former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi of war crimes and sentenced him to 25 years, over the arbitrary detention of 385 people and the torture of 303 others. (AP, Al Jazeera)
Coverage check: AP, NPR, Al Jazeera and Euronews reported the verdict and sentence the same way. Kosovo’s government called the conviction “unjust,” while a Serbian minister praised it, and unrest was reported in Pristina afterward, a real political dispute over the verdict’s legitimacy, not over what the court actually found. Fox News coverage was limited to a brief wire pickup, no notable independent commentary weighed in.
Framing difference: Kosovo’s government (“unjust”) versus a Serbian minister (praise) on the verdict’s legitimacy.
Expired ACA subsidies push premiums up 58 percent and cut projected enrollment by 4.8 million
Enhanced ACA marketplace subsidies expired this year, pushing average monthly premium payments up 58 percent and projected enrollment down by about 4.8 million people. (KFF)
Coverage check: Fox News and Fox Business framed it as “Congress blocks Obamacare subsidies after shutdown fight, premiums set to surge,” leading with political blame. CNN and NBC led with the consumer impact, “Obamacare enrollment drops after enhanced premium subsidies expire.” Both sides are using the same KFF numbers, they just lead with a different half of the story.
Framing difference: political blame (Fox, Fox Business) versus the consumer impact (CNN, NBC).
EU Commission president proposes an Emergency Security Protocol for drone incursions and sabotage
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed an Emergency Security Protocol letting any EU member state convene all 27 nations in response to drone incursions and sabotage. (AP, US News)
Coverage check: Wire coverage of the proposal, tied to suspected Russian drone and sabotage activity, was consistent across outlets that picked it up at all. Fox and CNN gave it only brief mention, no notable independent commentary weighed in. This one is straight reporting, not a spin story.
Framing difference: none of note; straight reporting.
Markets snapshot: all three US indexes close lower after the Fed’s rate hike
- S&P 500: 7,552.24 (-0.44%)
- Dow Jones: 51,462.10 (-1.21%)
- Nasdaq: 25,978.40 (-0.01%)
- Brent crude: $108.34 (+1.63%)
All three US indices closed lower Wednesday after the Fed’s rate hike, with the Dow leading the drop on Chair Warsh’s hawkish inflation comments. Brent crude is holding near multi-year highs, reflecting ongoing Middle East supply concerns tied to the Iran conflict.
Health & Longevity: berberine, liver fat and cholesterol in adults with obesity
The finding: In a 6 month trial, daily berberine did not reduce visceral or liver fat in non-diabetic adults with obesity, but it did modestly lower LDL cholesterol and an inflammation marker.
The source: JAMA Network Open, January 2026, randomized controlled trial, 337 diabetes-free adults with obesity and fatty liver disease across 11 hospitals in China, 6 months of berberine hydrochloride versus placebo.
Do this today: the studied dose was 1 gram a day, split 500 milligrams twice with meals, if you already take berberine for cholesterol support, don’t expect it to work as a fat loss shortcut based on this trial.
Worth knowing: this result contradicts earlier positive findings in people with diabetes, so berberine’s benefits may not carry over to non-diabetic people, check with a doctor before starting any new supplement, especially given possible interactions with diabetes or blood pressure medications, and this newsletter isn’t written by a medical professional and isn’t a substitute for advice from your doctor.
