Friday’s issue of The Cross Check Daily puts six lead stories side by side across Fox News, CNN and other outlets, then closes with a markets snapshot, a research-backed health tip and a trivia question.

Judge reinstates Seattle US attorney Roger Rogoff, fired less than an hour after swearing-in

Judge Stanley Bastian ruled in Seattle on Thursday that the president cannot unilaterally fire a U.S. attorney appointed by the district court, reinstating Roger Rogoff, who was fired less than an hour after being sworn in on July 15; the Justice Department said it will appeal. (CBS News)

Coverage check: CBS, CNN, ABC, The Washington Post, UPI and The Washington Times all carried the ruling and agree on the core facts (judge, date, reinstatement, planned appeal). I did not find a Fox News national story on the ruling, only a report from Fox’s Seattle local station, so I can’t confirm or flag Fox’s framing. Headlines differ in emphasis: CNN stresses he “had the job for an hour,” CBS stresses the reinstatement, The Washington Times says the judge “cancels” the firing.

flydubai co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and tried to crash the plane

A co-pilot on a FlyDubai flight bound for Tel Aviv allegedly stabbed the captain and tried to crash the plane before passengers and crew overpowered him and the jet diverted to Saudi Arabia, according to Israeli officials. (CNBC)

Coverage check: Fox News adopts the Israeli government’s “terror attack” label and leads with the passenger-hero angle; CBS and The Washington Post also report Israel’s “radicalized” claim. FlyDubai urges against speculation and says motives are subject to investigation, Netanyahu said it is too early to say if Iran was involved, and Gulf News carried a flydubai and UAE aviation authority denial of “hijacking” rumours. Fox is consistent with the mainstream outlets on the basic facts. No prominent independent commentator on this story turned up.

Factual disagreement: motive and any Iran link; see the coverage check above.

10-year Treasury yield touches its highest level since 2002

The 10-year Treasury yield touched about 5.34% this week, its highest level since 2002, before easing to about 5.24% on Thursday as traders awaited today’s jobs report. (Yahoo Finance / CNN Business)

Coverage check: CNN Business frames it as a “bond market bust,” NBC News leads with mortgage rates at their highest since 2023, and CNBC focuses on the oil, inflation and Fed-hike drivers behind the move. The yield levels themselves are not in dispute. I did not find a Fox News piece on this specific move, so Fox’s treatment is unconfirmed.

Putin calls long-range strike ceasefire proposals “simply ridiculous” and warns on Kaliningrad

Vladimir Putin told Moscow’s Valdai forum on Thursday that proposals for a mutual ceasefire on long-range strikes were “simply ridiculous,” and warned that a direct attack on Kaliningrad would put the use of all weapons “on the agenda.” (Al Jazeera)

Coverage check: CBC and Al Jazeera report the statements as quotes and context. Fox’s related Kaliningrad coverage treats the nuclear warning as credible and quotes analysts who call it a sign of desperation, while NATO calls Moscow’s claim of a threat to Kaliningrad false and says it is purely defensive, and Ukrainian outlets dispute Putin’s account of the war. Fox is consistent with the mainstream on what was said.

Factual disagreement: whether Kaliningrad faces a threat, and Putin’s account of the war; see the coverage check above.

Tennessee’s execution attempt on Christa Pike fails after two doses

Tennessee’s attempt to execute Christa Pike failed after two lethal injection doses, she is in critical condition according to her lawyers, and Gov. Bill Lee halted all executions for the rest of 2026 and ordered an outside review. (NPR)

Coverage check: NPR, CNN, NBC and Fox News agree on the facts. Fox’s national piece leads with a death penalty expert and Pike’s lawyers urging commutation, with little from prosecutors or victim advocates, while NBC leads with witness accounts that “it was a mess.” The Death Penalty Information Center (an anti-death-penalty advocacy group) is also covering it heavily.

Three tankers hit by projectiles near the Strait of Hormuz

Three Liberian-flagged oil tankers were hit by unidentified projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to maritime security firm Marisks, with Brent crude trading near $100 a barrel. (Reuters via CNBC Africa)

Coverage check: Fox’s live coverage pairs the tanker strike with a third U.S. carrier deployment and Trump’s claim the Iranian nuclear threat was eliminated “in one night,” and describes the projectile as unknown. Reports reviewed do not attribute the attacks to anyone. Tucker Carlson has publicly called the Iran war Trump’s “single biggest mistake,” a sharply different frame from Fox’s. Fox is consistent with other outlets on the incident itself.

Markets snapshot: stocks edge up as the 10-year yield eases

  • S&P 500: 7,673.89 (+0.29%)
  • Dow Jones: 50,912.33 (+0.01%)
  • Nasdaq: 26,929.52 (+0.25%)
  • Brent crude: $100.60 (+2.61%)

Stocks edged up Thursday as AI chip names such as Micron rebounded and the 10-year yield eased from its 5.34% peak, the Treasury story in slot 3. Brent held near $100 after the Hormuz tanker strikes (slot 6) and China’s suspension of fuel exports; intraday Brent quotes varied by source. Today’s jobs report is the next catalyst. Health & Longevity: weekend-warrior exercise and lower mortality

The finding: Squeezing your exercise into just one or two sessions a week was linked to a lower risk of early death than being inactive, and about as good as spreading it over three or more days.

The source: dos Santos et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2022 (doi 10.1001/jamainternmed.2022.2488): 350,978 US adults from the National Health Interview Survey (1997 to 2013), followed a median of about 10 years; observational cohort study, so not a randomized trial.

Do this today: Put one 45 to 60 minute brisk walk, bike ride or hike on your calendar for this weekend, and build toward about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.

Worth knowing: Activity was self-reported and this design cannot prove cause and effect, and sudden hard efforts after long inactivity carry injury and cardiac risks, so ease in. This newsletter isn’t written by a medical professional and isn’t a substitute for advice from your doctor.

World Trivia
