Tuesday’s issue of The Cross Check Daily puts six lead stories side by side across Fox News, CNN and other outlets, then closes with a markets snapshot, a research-backed health tip and a trivia question.

Treasury yields near 19-year highs as Fed hike bets build

The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to about 5.30%, near its highest level since 2007, after the ISM services prices index rose to 74 from 72.6, while the Fed’s benchmark rate sits at 3.75% to 4.00% and Governors Cook and Barr have said inflation (3.8% headline, 3.4% core through August) has run too high (Yahoo Finance, Forbes).

Coverage check: CNBC and Yahoo Finance lead with the record Nasdaq close and treat higher yields as a backdrop, while Fed officials and rate strategists put the inflation and hike risk up front. I could not retrieve Fox News or independent commentary on today’s yield move, so no Fox comparison is possible.

Framing difference: the facts on yields and inflation are not in dispute, only whether stocks or rates lead the story (limited sources checked).

Yemen’s government says it retook Mocha from the Houthis

Yemen’s Saudi-backed government says its forces recaptured the Red Sea port of Mocha and the Dhubab district near the Bab al-Mandeb strait and has launched operations toward Sanaa (Al Jazeera, Qatar state-funded).

Coverage check: CNN and The National report the Saudi-backed offensive and the government’s claims, and Al Jazeera notes the government’s figure of 1,747 Houthi fighters “neutralised” could not be independently verified. The Houthis deny the territorial losses, and CBS News live coverage carried the Houthi claim of control over Bab el-Mandeb. I could not retrieve Fox News coverage of this offensive.

Factual disagreement: the government says it holds Mocha and Dhubab, the Houthis deny losing ground and claim Bab el-Mandeb, and no independent confirmation of either side’s version has been found.

ICE arrests hit record monthly levels, analysis finds

Immigration arrests reached nearly 51,000 in August, the highest monthly total on record, and half of July’s arrests involved people with no prior criminal justice contact, according to a Marshall Project analysis of ICE data compiled by the Deportation Data Project (Marshall Project via KTVZ).

Coverage check: The Marshall Project frames the surge as quieter but no less aggressive, driven by traffic stops and local 287(g) agreements. The ACLU (an advocacy group) ties the deportation push to affordability costs, and ABC News has reported ICE’s own count of more than 350,000 removals so far in fiscal 2026. I could not retrieve Fox News coverage of this analysis.

Framing difference: the enforcement numbers are broadly consistent, but outlets split on whether to emphasize record arrests, people without criminal records, or total removals.

US pulls all B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford after alleged plot

The US redeployed roughly a dozen B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in England to home stations over the weekend, and a Pentagon official gave no explicit reason, while UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” Iran played a part in an alleged plot against the base (Al Jazeera, TIME).

Coverage check: Axios headlined the move as a response to the threat of an Iranian drone attack, and Al Jazeera framed it around Iran fears, while a local ABC affiliate pointed to a suspected terror plot probe. Iran denies involvement and summoned the UK ambassador. Five men arrested September 27 were released without charge, and police found petrol but no explosives. I could not retrieve Fox News coverage.

Factual disagreement: some outlets attribute the withdrawal to an Iranian drone threat, but the Pentagon gave no reason, Iran denies any role, and investigators have not announced conclusions.

Trump says it is “nice to get along” with nuclear-armed North Korea

At an Ohio rally, President Trump said he gets along “great” with Kim Jong Un and that “when people have 112 nuclear missiles, it’s nice to get along,” without saying where the figure comes from (UPI, Free Press Journal).

Coverage check: UPI and Korea JoongAng Daily report the remarks as a defense of personal diplomacy with Kim, noting Trump’s three prior meetings with him. I found no official or independent source confirming the 112 figure, and I could not retrieve current Fox News or CNN coverage of the remarks.

Framing difference: no outlet found disputes that he said it, but the 112 figure is unexplained and unverified.

Iran’s president rules out US talks as a third tanker is hit near Hormuz

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called negotiations with the US “meaningless” as a third tanker in two days was reported struck near the Strait of Hormuz, and Brent crude held near $100 (Gulf News, Iran International, CBS News).

Coverage check: CBS News live coverage leads with Washington rejecting Iran’s conditions for reopening the strait while leaving the door open to talks or renewed operations. Gulf News and Iran International (a Persian-language outlet critical of Tehran) center Tehran’s rejection of talks, and Iran’s foreign minister says only diplomacy, not military action, can end the conflict. The projectiles that hit the tankers were not attributed to any party in the coverage I found.

Framing difference: outlets agree on the sequence of events but differ on who is blocking a deal, and the source of the tanker attacks remains unattributed.

Markets snapshot: stocks split as yields climb and the Nasdaq hits a record

  • S&P 500: 7,752.30 (+0.38%)
  • Dow Jones: 51,052.93 (-0.24%)
  • Nasdaq Composite: 27,383.43 (+0.71%)
  • Brent crude (early Oct. 5 trading): $103.06 (+0.79%)

Stocks split on Monday as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed (story 1) while the Nasdaq closed at a record on tech gains, and Brent stayed near $100 to $103 with the Yemen and Hormuz stories (stories 2 and 6) in play. The September CPI report on October 14 is the next major inflation data point.

Health & Longevity: psyllium husk and LDL cholesterol

The finding: Taking about 10 grams a day of psyllium husk fiber lowered LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by roughly 13 mg/dL in pooled randomized trials.

The source: Meta-analysis of 28 randomized controlled trials, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, September 2018 (as summarized by Harvard Health); participant total not given in the summary I checked; benefits appeared after at least three weeks.

Do this today: Stir about 5 grams of plain psyllium husk into a full glass of water with a meal and drink it right away, then work up toward the roughly 10 grams a day used in the studies, split across two meals.

Worth knowing: This measures cholesterol, a surrogate marker, not heart attacks or lifespan, and the effect is modest and needs daily use; psyllium must be taken with plenty of water and can affect how some medications are absorbed, so check with your doctor before starting any new supplement, and note that this newsletter isn’t written by a medical professional and isn’t a substitute for advice from your doctor.
